National Park Trail

A playful Everwild quest through Great Smoky Mountains National Park — where mountain roads twist through old forests, water moves over stone, cabins tell quiet stories, and the mist makes the ridgelines feel alive.

Best for: scenic drives, nature lovers, families, couples, photographers, wildlife-safe viewing, waterfall seekers, history lovers, first-time Smoky Mountain visitors, and guests who want the park itself to become part of their stay.

Choose one level or complete all three.

How It Works

Pick a level based on your day, your group, and how much exploring you want to do.

You can take photos, write down your finds, or simply enjoy the moment. Nothing needs to be collected or removed.

Before You Begin

This trail is flexible. You do not need to complete every clue in one day.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is wild land, old forest, historic ground, and protected habitat. Some stops may require parking tags, early arrival, seasonal road access, safe pull-offs, hiking ability, extra water, or weather-friendly timing. Please check current park conditions before heading out. Roads, trails, parking areas, and access can change because of weather, construction, wildlife activity, seasonal closures, or high visitation.

This trail is not meant to include everything. It is a curated Everwild-style quest to help you choose a few meaningful moments without feeling overwhelmed.

The Smokies are best explored with patience, respect, and room in the day for something unexpected.

Respect wildlife, stay on trails, do not block traffic, do not stop in unsafe places, and never approach or feed animals. Take only photos, leave only footprints, and let the mountains stay wild.

Start National Park Trail

Level 1: Mountain Seeker

The Gateway to the Smokies Quest

Difficulty: Easy
Best for: first-time park visitors, families, arrival day, shorter outings, light walking, peaceful views, and guests who want a simple way to experience the park without a full-day hike.

This level gives you an easy introduction to the park: a visitor center, a short waterfall walk, moving water, and one quiet mountain moment.

Clue 1: The Ranger’s Doorway

Find the place where maps, trails, wildlife stories, and mountain advice wait before the forest begins.

Find: Sugarlands Visitor Center

Quest: Stop for a map, restroom break, park information, or a quick look at exhibits before choosing your route.

Photo Challenge:
Take one “start of the park day” photo — a map, sign, trailhead, tree line, or first glimpse of the mountains.

Memory Prompt:
What kind of Smoky Mountain day does your group want: quiet, scenic, historic, wild, or adventurous?

Clue 2: The Small Waterfall Behind the Doorway

Find the waterfall hidden close enough for a simple walk, where water drops through the forest and the park begins to feel real.

Find: Cataract Falls near Sugarlands Visitor Center

Quest: Take the short walk to the falls and look for water, moss, rhododendron, roots, and forest texture along the way.

Photo Challenge:
Take one close-up photo of water, moss, leaves, bark, or stone.

Safety Note:
Do not climb around waterfalls or rocks. Enjoy the view from safe, allowed areas.

Clue 3: The Road Beside the River

Find the road where the river keeps you company and every curve feels like an invitation to slow down.

Find: Little River Road

Quest: Drive toward a safe pull-off, picnic area, or quiet view along the river. Stop only where parking is allowed and all wheels are fully out of the roadway.

Photo Challenge:
Take one photo of moving water, rounded river stones, forest reflections, or sunlight through the trees.

Clue 4: The Quiet Walk

Find a short place to step out of the car and hear the Smokies without a crowd.

Find: A quiet walkway, short nature path, or safe riverside stop along your route.

Quest: Walk slowly for a few minutes and listen before taking a photo.

Memory Prompt:
What did you hear first — water, birds, leaves, wind, people, or silence?

Complete Level 1 When You Find:

  • One park doorway moment
  • One waterfall or water detail
  • One river or forest view
  • One quiet moment where the Smokies felt close
Level 2: Ridge Explorer

The Forest Road, History & Water Quest

Difficulty: Moderate
Best for: half-day explorers, scenic drivers, history lovers, families with older kids, photographers, and guests who want more park feeling without planning a major hike.

This level takes you deeper into the Smokies through forest roads, historic structures, old communities, and streamside trails.

Clue 1: The Road That Roars

Find the one-way forest road named for a rushing mountain stream, where trees, water, moss, cabins, and pull-offs make Gatlinburg feel wild again.

Find: Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

Quest: Drive slowly, stop only where safe and allowed, and look for one stream, one old structure, and one forest detail.

Photo Challenge:
Take one photo of moving water, old wood, mossy stone, or forest light.

Clue 2: The Cabin From Another Time

Find a place that reminds you people once lived in these mountains long before Gatlinburg became a vacation town.

Find: A historic cabin, mill, barn, chimney, foundation, or preserved structure in the park.

Quest: Pause near the structure and imagine one morning in mountain life long ago.

Memory Prompt:
What would have been hardest about living here — weather, work, distance, darkness, or silence?

Clue 3: The River Trail of Ghosts

Find the trail where a former railroad path follows the river and old stone chimneys still whisper about a community that once gathered here.

Find: Little River Trail / Elkmont area

Quest: Walk as far as feels comfortable. Look for river views, stone chimneys, foundations, old community traces, and forest details.

Photo Challenge:
Take one photo that shows both nature and history — stone, wood, water, trail, or a structure returning to the forest.

Clue 4: The Picnic Table With a Mountain Soundtrack

Find a place where lunch or a snack feels better because the river is nearby.

Find: Metcalf Bottoms, a park picnic area, or another safe allowed picnic stop.

Quest: Pause for a snack, lunch, or water break and listen to the sound around you before checking your phone.

Memory Prompt:
What simple thing feels better in the mountains?

Clue 5: The Hidden Detail Challenge

Find something small that proves the Smokies are not just big views.

Find: A leaf pattern, root, lichen, fern, stone, shadow, reflection, wildflower, acorn, or ripple.

Quest: Notice one tiny detail and give it a name.

Photo Challenge:
Take one close-up photo that feels like a secret from the forest.

Complete Level 2 When You Find:

  • One forest road moment
  • One historic mountain-life detail
  • One river or trail moment
  • One small forest secret
  • One place you would recommend to a future Everwild guest
Level 3: Wild at Heart

The Mountain Legend Quest

Difficulty: Bigger adventure
Best for: full-day explorers, early risers, scenic drive lovers, photographers, Cades Cove days, high-elevation views, repeat visitors, and guests who want the Smokies to feel unforgettable.

This level is the big one. Choose either the Cades Cove path, the High Country path, or create your own full-day mix.

Path A: The Cades Cove Legend

Clue 1: The Valley Surrounded by Mountains

Find the one-way loop where open fields, old cabins, churches, wildlife-safe viewing, and blue ridges tell the story of the Smokies.

Find: Cades Cove

Quest: Drive the loop slowly. Look for one wide mountain view, one historic structure, and one quiet field.

Photo Challenge:
Take two photos: one big landscape and one small historic detail.

Clue 2: The Church in the Valley

Find a place where mountain families once gathered, prayed, sang, and marked time.

Find: A historic church or cemetery in Cades Cove.

Quest: Step carefully and respectfully. Notice one date, doorway, window, bench, or old wood detail.

Memory Prompt:
What makes a place feel sacred, even after many years?

Clue 3: The Wildlife-Safe Watch

Find a wildlife moment without getting too close, feeding animals, blocking traffic, or stepping into danger.

Find: Wildlife-safe viewing in Cades Cove or elsewhere in the park.

Quest: Watch from a safe distance. Use zoom if taking photos. Never approach wildlife.

Photo Challenge:
Capture a safe wildlife photo from a distance, or photograph the field, tree line, or quiet view where wildlife might appear.

Clue 4: The Waterfall With a Warning

Find the powerful waterfall reached by a moderate trail from the Cades Cove loop, where beauty and danger sit close together.

Find: Abrams Falls, only if your group is prepared for the hike and current conditions allow.

Quest: Hike only if everyone in your group is prepared with water, shoes, time, and energy.

Safety Note:
Swimming is strongly discouraged. Rocks are slippery, and the water near falls can be dangerous.

Photo Challenge:
Take one respectful waterfall photo from a safe place.

Path B: The High Country Legend

Clue 1: The Road Across the Mountains

Find the road where Tennessee and North Carolina meet, and the Smokies rise into a different world of higher air, cooler temperatures, and layered views.

Find: Newfound Gap Road

Quest: Drive safely, stop only at allowed pull-offs, and notice how the forest changes as you climb.

Photo Challenge:
Take one photo where the ridges stack like shadows.

Clue 2: The Gap Between Two States

Find the high mountain pass where the view opens and the park feels bigger than one town, one trip, or one plan.

Find: Newfound Gap

Quest: Step out, read a sign, and look both ways — toward Tennessee and toward North Carolina.

Memory Prompt:
What does the mountain air feel like here compared to town?

Clue 3: The Highest Point in the Smokies

Find the mountaintop once known as Clingmans Dome, now restored as Kuwohi, where the park rises to its highest point.

Find: Kuwohi and the Kuwohi Observation Tower, if the road is open and parking is available.

Quest: If conditions allow, walk the steep paved half-mile path to the tower and look for the 360-degree view.

Photo Challenge:
Take one photo that feels like the roof of the Smokies.

Clue 4: The Weather Shift

Find proof that the mountains have their own mood.

Find: Fog, wind, changing light, cooler air, clouds moving over ridges, or sudden silence.

Quest: Notice how quickly the park can change with elevation and weather.

Memory Prompt:
Did the mountains feel peaceful, powerful, mysterious, or wild?

Complete Level 3 When You Find:

  • One legendary scenic drive
  • One historic or cultural detail
  • One wildlife-safe or nature moment
  • One high-view or deep-valley photo
  • One memory that could only happen in the Smokies
